Hollywood Beach 55th Candy Cane Parade!!!!

November 19th, 2010 by Lucy Serrano

Tis the season to start getting jolly! The City of Hollywood will hold its 55th Annual Candy Cane Parade on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. This year’s theme is the White Ice Parade. Local organizations and businesses will decorate floats and vehicles with thousands of white lights while handing out peppermints and candy canes the entire parade route which starts on the broadwalk at Scott Street and heads South to Harrison Street. Don’t pass up this wonderful event which I took my granddaughter to last year and to this day, she still remembers.   For more information on this and other Holiday events click on the following link: http://www.hollywoodfl.org/parks_rec/special_events.asp

Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort Moving Forward

August 29th, 2010 by Lucy Serrano

Key West, Panama City Beach, Orlando and just recently Pensacola Beach are all home to Margaritaville Hotels in the Sunshine State.

Well, according to an article in the South Florida Sun Times, soon Hollywood Beach will join the ranks and you will be able to sip your favorite tropical beverage, kick back wearing your flip flops and listen to “Cheeseburger Paradise” once this project is completed.  If fully approved, it will be developed at the city-owned beachfront property located on the Broadwalk at Johnson Street and A1A (click on the link below for complete details).

It could be one of the biggest things to happen in the area as the national and international exposure would give an economic boost to all the existing businesses in and around Hollywood Beach.   I don’t know about you, but I could sure use a good Margarita …. I mean boost!!!!

It’s storm season …..

July 16th, 2010 by Lucy Serrano

… time to assemble a Disaster Supply Kit.

Hurricane Season in Florida

Its Hurricane Season

It’s definitely hurricane season and as more and more waves start forming in the tropics, sooner or later we all know what happens.   A few will develop into strong tropical storms and/or hurricanes!   Putting together a disaster kit today will save you time and headaches.  I read a really good article on being prepared for what happens after a tornado, hurricane or just a strong summer thunderstorm in which FEMA and the Red Cross offer suggestions on how to prepare for a natural disaster.

First are the basics:  you will need to collect food, water, first aid and tools to last at least 3 days, longer is better.   Plastic containers are perfect to store your supplies and keep them dry.   Find a few containers that you can pick up and pack with you if you need to move or evacuate.

Next, drinking water:  make sure you prepare at least one gallon of water per person, per day.  Buy bottled water or store tap water in washed plastic containers.  Put the date on the container and make sure to refresh your supply every six months.   Another great tip is to pick up some water treatment tablets to keep in your kit in case you run out of water.

Food supplies:  canned meats, fruits and vegetables are good choices along with peanut butter, crackers, powdered milk, soup, granola bars, instant coffee (this would be a must for me), and basic spices like salt and pepper.  Make sure everything is non-perishable and use a marker to date foods and replace them every six months.  Also include paper plates, plastic cups, utensils and trash bags.  Don’t forget a can opener!!!

First Aid Kit:  pack a manual and pre-pared first aid kit as this should cover the basics like gauze and bandages.  Gather together antibiotic ointment, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide as well as anti-bacterial soap.  In addition, include a small supply of over-the-counter items like aspirin, anti-diarrhea medication, and antihistamines along with any regular prescriptions you or your family needs.

Essential Tools and Supplies:  besides food, water and medical supplies, you will need to pack a variety of items for safety and comfort.  These include a flashlight with extra batteries, needle & thread, matches in a waterproof container, duct tape, scissors, blankets, a change of clothes and plastic sheeting.  Include chlorine bleach and other disinfectants as well as a few rolls of toilet paper and paper towels.  Don’t forget about your pets!  Make sure to pack adequate supplies of their food and extra water as well.

Last but not least, make sure to keep a copy of household documents, insurance policies, contact numbers, and any other important account information in a waterproof bag or lock box for safe keeping.

Speaking from personal experience having had to survive after Hurricane Hugo and others on the island of Puerto Rico, I would add one more item to the above suggestions from FEMA and the Red Cross.  Invest in a Coleman Two-Burner Stove (don’t forget either the propane or the liquid fuel depending upon the model).   Remember that instant coffee  -  well, I like mine hot!   Be prepared to stay safe and stay well.

4th of July Celebrations – Hollywood Beach & Hallandale Beach

June 29th, 2010 by Lucy Serrano

Come celebrate our nation’s 234th birthday on Hollywood Beach & Broadwalk on Sunday, July 4th.  Hollywood will be holding its annual Star Spangled Spectacular.  There will be entertainment throughout the day and evening at the Hollywood Beach Theatre, plus a dazzling offshore fireworks display beginning at 9:00 pm.

Music, games, a fruit pie eating contest, a corn cobbler eating contest and a Limbo challenge are just a few of the events.  There will be fun, dancing and games for the little ones at Charnow Park at Garfield Street on the Beach at 12:30 pm and will run until 7:00 pm.  And the best part is that the intracoastal bridges (Dania Beach Blvd, Sheridan Street, and Hollywood Blvd) will remain in the down position from 8:00 pm to 11:30 pm to allow traffic to exit the beach.   So no stress getting back home.

Now as for the City of Hallandale Beach, they will be holding its celebration of America on Saturday, July 3rd from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at the beautiful South City Beach which is located on A1A, just south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard.

They are planning a “Family Fun Zone Beach Bash” with loads of entertaining activities for everyone.  There will be a D.J. with music and games throughout the afternoon, the “Happy Birthday, America” party, a clown, a caricature artist, kid’s crafts, a rock wall, bungee jump and plenty of inflatables.  The event is free to everyone.  Food concessions will be available for sale.

So just pick a day, any day and come visit either Hollywood or Hallandale Beach with your family.   As for parking, just click here www.visithollywoodfl.org/Beach&DowntownMap.pdf and you are good to go.

Hollywood on a Sunday afternoon

Experience the ArtsPark…
Where Music, Art, and People Meet.

One Young Circle
Hollywood Boulevard & Federal Highway (U.S. Route 1)
(954) 921-3500

I love visiting the park on Sunday afternoons.  It is so relaxing and there is always something to do and not just for the “little ones”.    Don’t miss an opportunity to visit this beautiful landmark in the town of Hollywood, “where music, people, and art meet”.    There are events throughout the entire year for the entire family.   Funtastic Fridays for Kids are my favorite.   It is held every Friday from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.,  featuring Mama Clown and Friends, bounce house, face painters, magic & more.   (http://www.downtownhollywood.com/EventCalendar/tabid/231/Default.aspx).  And parking??? Don’t worry, there is plenty of parking all within walking distance (http://www.downtownhollywood.com/portals/downtown/pdf/wheretopark.pdf).

The ArtsPark at Young Circle is located in a 10-acre traffic circle in Downtown Hollywood. Dedicated in March 2007, the ArtsPark offers residents and visitors a wide array of visual and performing arts themed educational, recreational, and entertainment activities for all ages.

Millennium Springs, created by Japanese artist Ritsuko Taho, is a creative water feature and environmental sculpture that interprets the life energy of a Baobab tree along with the dreams of the City’s founder.  Fulfilling the dreams of many youngsters, the children’s playground, its innovative equipment, and an interactive water fountain are consistently the busiest attraction at the ArtsPark.

Young and not so young visitors are also amused and inspired by Romero Britto’s Butterfly sculpture located nearby.  A typical week’s program of activities can include 100 hours of demonstrations offered by working artists in the Visual Arts Pavilion where glass blowing, jewelry making, and sculpturing take place.  Music is the mainstay of entertainment at the ArtsPark.  With a concert scheduled for the third Thursday evening of every month plus festivals and special events, the amphitheater offers blues, big band, country, classical, salsa, and more.  The ArtsPark welcomes buskers (street performers) and vendors of high quality, hand-made art as late afternoon turns to evening on most days.  A selection of musicians, magicians, dancers, puppeteers, jugglers, storytellers, comics, clowns, balloon sculptors perform for the pleasure of their audiences and the reward of tips and gratuities.  The ArtsPark also offers more than 25 hours of fitness and art classes and 35 hours during which outstanding art can be viewed in the exhibition gallery.
