Mortgage Rates Hit 50 Year Low

August 23rd, 2011 by Rich Barnhart

According to Freddie Mac’s weekly survey the average rate for a 30-year fixed loan fell to 4.15 percent last week, down from 4.32%. That was the lowest in more than a half century. Frank Nothaft, chief economist for Freddie Mac said, “The Federal Reserve’s policy statement last week and ongoing market concerns over the European debt market carried momentum into this week allowing all mortgage products in our survey to reach all-time record lows.”

Is it time to refinance or perhaps purchase that dream home you’ve always wanted? With interest rates this low and property values down there has never been a better time to buy. Even investors who typically purchase real estate with cash are leveraging their investment properties in order to take advantage of these low rates.

Volunteers to Help the Whales Still Needed

May 24th, 2011 by Rich Barnhart

First of all, thank you so much to those of you who donated supplies to the Marine Mammal Conservancy. The volunteers at the Conservancy were so grateful when I delivered them on Saturday. What a wonderful group of people! I’ll be going back Wednesday night if anyone would like to drop off more supplies at our office – see the updated list below. Also, if you’d like to volunteer and ride along with me, I’ll be leaving Fort Lauderdale at 9:30 PM for a midnight shift with the whales and returning home after my shift at 4:00 AM. Back in time for work Thursday morning! Volunteers are still needed, especially for the night shifts.

Here is a link to a webcam at the conservancy if you’re interested. It is hard to see the whales, but you can see the beautiful setting and the volunteers hard at work…

You Can Help Save the Whales in Florida Keys

Volunteers help stranded pilot whale near Key West

If you have been following our local news then you know about the group of 21 pilot whales that stranded themselves off Cudjoe Key a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately 15 of them did not survive, but 2 of them have been safely released back into the wild. There are 4 remaining survivors that have been relocated to the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo. The survivors are anywhere from 8.9 to 13 feet long and range from 600 to 1,800 pounds. They are very social animals and travel in larger groups which may have led to their stranding. These 4 female pilot whales are now clinging to life and volunteers are literally cradling them 24 hours a day. They are being fed broad-spectrum antibiotics and “fish smoothies” consisting of purified water, vitamins and blended fish.

How can you help?

I’m glad you asked. The conservancy could really use volunteers, but if you cannot dedicate the time, then cash donations and supplies are needed too (see list below). If you want to drop off any of these items at our office we will make sure they get to the Conservancy in Key Largo. The whales could be there for several months, so anytime you can assist it would be appreciated.
